How to Choose the Correct Mortise Lock Body (AUSLOCK)

Mortise lock bodies come in different sizes. Choosing the correct mortise ensures your AUSLOCK handle aligns properly and the latch/bolt operates smoothly.

What to measure

  • Backset: door edge → handle spindle center
  • Faceplate length: top → bottom of the mortise plate
  • Latch style: latch only vs latch + deadbolt
  • Spindle/cylinder alignment: confirm handle & key positions match the door prep

Step-by-step: Identify your mortise

  1. Open the door and take clear photos of the mortise faceplate and the door edge cut-out.
  2. Measure the backset (edge to spindle center).
  3. Measure faceplate length (top to bottom).
  4. Check if there’s a separate deadbolt function in the mortise.

Signs the mortise is wrong

  • Handle feels stiff or doesn’t return
  • Latch doesn’t fully retract
  • Lock won’t align to the strike plate
