How to Choose the Correct Mortise Lock Body (AUSLOCK)
Mortise lock bodies come in different sizes. Choosing the correct mortise ensures your AUSLOCK handle aligns properly and the latch/bolt operates smoothly.
What to measure
- Backset: door edge → handle spindle center
- Faceplate length: top → bottom of the mortise plate
- Latch style: latch only vs latch + deadbolt
- Spindle/cylinder alignment: confirm handle & key positions match the door prep
Step-by-step: Identify your mortise
- Open the door and take clear photos of the mortise faceplate and the door edge cut-out.
- Measure the backset (edge to spindle center).
- Measure faceplate length (top to bottom).
- Check if there’s a separate deadbolt function in the mortise.
Signs the mortise is wrong
- Handle feels stiff or doesn’t return
- Latch doesn’t fully retract
- Lock won’t align to the strike plate
